Dr. Paul Friedman Published in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine

Dr. Paul Friedman, the director of Dermatology & Laser Surgery Center in Houston, recently published research in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, a prestigious peer reviewed scientific journal. His report, Laser Therapy of Traumatic and Surgical Scars and an Algorithm for Their Treatment, was co-authored with Dr. Arielle Kauvar, Shelby L. Kubicki, and Dr. Amanda K. Suggs.

Laser Treatment for Scars

Dr. Friedman and his co-authors aimed to develop an algorithm for the treatment of surgical and trauma scars through analysis of their own clinical experience and critical review of current literature on laser scar treatment. They concluded that laser therapy is the first-line approach for scars caused by trauma or surgery. Dr. Friedman and his colleagues determined that an optimal treatment plan requires providers to choose the appropriate laser type depending on the varied characteristics of the patient’s scar, including type of injury, the location, color, tension, age, and thickness of the scar. Their research also explores combination therapies in which surgical and non-surgical treatments are combined with laser therapy.
