At the Dermatology & Laser Surgery Center, we use the Picoway laser for tattoo removal. In MDEdge, Dr. Friedman explains that one additional benefit of the Picoway laser is, “its ability to safely treat a number of various benign, congenital, and acquired epidermal and dermal pigmented lesions with ultrashort pulse duration and low thermal impact, which greatly reduces the risk of postinflammatory hyperpigmentation even in darker skin types.” In other words, the Picoway laser can be used safely on any skin type, which is important in an ethnically diverse city like Houston.

Dr. Friedman also discussed his research on the application of the Picoway laser to café-au-lait macules, which are flat, pigmented birthmarks. In particular, he has found that the 730-nm picosecond titanium sapphire handpiece of the Picoway laser has proven to be safe and effective for patients of color who desire lightening of café-au-lait macules.
